Revised Standards for RTOs
The revised Standards for RTOs (SRTOs) are made up of three (3) documents (so far):
The Outcome Standards
Compliance Requirements
Credential Policy
Since closing for public consultation in October 2024, there has been no news on whether the Credential Policy will push ahead with the changes suggested as required to deliver and assess VET. This means, at this point, it is unknown what changes might lie ahead for trainer/assessors.
It has previously been communicated by DEWR that the revised Standards will be enacted (come into legislation) on 1 January 2025 (full regulatory effect on 1 July 2025). Until then, nothing has changed in terms of what a person must have/hold to be a VET trainer/assessor. The Standards for RTOs 2015 - incorporating the 'early changes' of March 2024 - are still in force.
Further, what continues as a mainstay whether it's the previous, current or incoming legislative requirements is this:
Delivering and assessing vocational education and training is a privilege, with responsibility to do it correctly and thoroughly
VET trainer/assessors must have intimate knowledge of what they're delivering and they must have the skills currently used in workplaces
VET trainer/assessors must also have the capability to facilitate learning in a way that suits the audience and aligns with best-practice theory for training and education
Whatever credentials - whatever 'pieces of paper' - are nominated as the minimum requirement to do this into the future, remains to be seen. Until the first of January 2025 (or whenever the new legislation is made), trainers/assessors have no change to the business-as-usual of using their existing skills, knowledge and experience to deliver quality training as preparation of the next generation of workers.
